Moldova’s Green Agenda: Key to EU Integration and Emission Goals, Says Ambassador to Sweden
Last Friday, Liliana Gutan, Moldova’s Ambassador to Sweden, paid a visit to the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI). The meeting centred on the Green Agenda for Armenia, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine project, explained SEI's Senior Communications and Impact Officer Ilona Kazaryan, MBA.
Fedra Vanhuyse, PhD, Head of SEI’s Division for Societies, Climate, and Policy Support, introduced the Ambassador to our global initiatives. Following her introduction, Gabor Schneider, Project Manager for SEI’s Green Agenda, provided an insightful presentation on SEI’s ongoing work in Moldova, highlighting the development of a strategic roadmap to guide the country's green transition in alignment with its EU ambitions. Additionally, they discussed the ongoing national assessments that will feed into a comprehensive green strategy for Moldova.
The Ambassador emphasised the strategic importance of the Green Agenda project due to its holistic approach, acknowledging the need for a unified document summarising progress and needs across diverse sectors of the economy. She stressed Moldova's complex geopolitical situation and the challenges it faces, especially as its neighbour, Ukraine, fights for independence and a peaceful future for countries in the region.
The Ambassador accentuated the importance of ensuring that Georgia, along with Moldova and Ukraine, remains on course for EU accession, emphasising the crucial role this plays in regional security. Facilitating closer ties between Armenia and the EU is equally important.
The Ambassador noted the necessity for all four countries to receive support in aligning with EU standards. She expressed gratitude for our expert support, emphasising Moldova’s dedication and great potential to meet EU emission reduction targets.
"This is where the Green Agenda project proves invaluable," Guțan said, adding that with its robust commitments and promising potential to lower greenhouse emissions, as pledged at COP, Moldova could emerge as a success story.
